Brandon Spikes Cried About Missing the Pro Bowl and Tom Brady Gave Zero Fucks
Source - The Pro Bowl does not matter.
If you hadn’t already figured that out on your own, take it from Tom Brady.
Former New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes was remembering his time in Foxborough this week, and recalled a time after his third season in 2012 when he didn’t get selected for the Pro Bowl.
Spikes — who played for the Patriots from 2010-2013, and then for the Buffalo Bills in 2014 and 2016 before retiring — had a great season that year, too. He recorded 56 solo tackles, a career best, and started all but two games. He felt that was beyond good enough to make a Pro Bowl roster.
When he didn’t make it, Spikes was crushed.
“I’d been playing off the charts, and I didn’t get picked to go to the Pro Bowl,” Spikes told Sports Illustrated. “I was moping around, actually in tears, and a few guys were trying to lift me up, like, ‘It’s gonna be alright man. We’ve got to worry about what’s in front of us.'”
Then, Brady walked up to him.
“Then The Pharaoh himself walks up to me — I used to call Brady ‘The Pharaoh’ and he hated that,” Spikes told Sports Illustrated. “Brady walks up to me and says, ‘Hey B, you think I play this shit to go to Pro Bowls? Get it together. Get your head up. We’re trying to win rings. That’s what it is here.’
“That’s where I knew what kind of environment I was in, how blessed I was.”
I'm not even a Patriots fan and this type of shit makes my pants tight. Tom Brady is just a different level of competitor altogether. Get your shit together Brandon, no one gives a fuck about the Pro Bowl. You won't even be able to play in it idiot, our season won't be over yet because we go to the AFC Championship game every year usually the Super Bowl shortly after that. I saw a stat this week that said if you're an 18 year old who grew up in Boston, the Patriots have been in the Super Bowl half the years you've been alive. That just isn't fair. All of us non-Patriots fans are just hoping and praying that Brady and Belichick go away.
That's why I've spent the last couple weeks convincing myself that they will both retire if they win one more. So now I won't be furious when they inevitably beat the Rams and raise the Lombardi trophy for the sixth time, because my dumb brain actually believes it will mean they are finally going to go away forever.
They won't.
They'll come back. They'll win more. We'll all suffer for as long as they want us to.
Tom Schreck Strikes Again in Keith Thurman Decision Win
After two years out of the ring, Keith Thurman finally made his comeback last night in Brooklyn against Josesito Lopez. Before the fight, Thurman openly declared that we would not see the best version of him and that proved to be very true. After dominating early and dropping Lopez with a perfectly place left hook in round 2, Thurman failed to capitalize and gradually Lopez worked his way back into the fight, finishing extremely strong in the second half after seizing momentum in the 7th round.
At the end of it all, Thurman walked away with a hard earned majority decision with scorecards of 115-111 and 117-109 in favor of Thurman, and the final judge scoring it a 113-113 draw. Personally, I don't understand the 113-113. Lopez managed to apply pressure at points but even in his most competitive rounds, you could make the argument that he was out punched by One Time.

The part that I found funny was Tom Schreck tossing out a 117-109. I myself had it 116-111
and I saw others have it around 117-110, but Schreck is notorious for lopsided scorecards.
Just ask Paulie Malignaggi:

Congrats to Thurman on the successful return to the ring, it sounds like he's going to be pursuing a Manny Pacquiao matchup next as opposed to Porter or Spence like we want to see. Given what looked to be a little ring rust versus Lopez, I can't disagree with the move. The Pacquiao fight is still a super entertaining matchup for the fans, it still has a belt on the line, and it isn't as dangerous as going up against Spence, a challenge Thurman has said he is saving for 2020.

Badou Jack is Tougher Than You and Every Single Person You've Ever Met Combined **Technically SFW**
If you missed it, here are the fight highlights.
And here's the part I wanna talk about.
Badou Jack is a goddamned warrior. Yes, I know he lost the fight to Marcus Browne, but who cares? That cut opened up in the 7th round when they knocked heads and he then went on to fight FIVE MORE ROUNDS with his face pouring blood like that. A decision loss is tough, but the simple fact that he was able to take it all the way to a decision is insanely impressive in and of itself.

Mikey Garcia Has Been Bulking Up For His Fight With Errol Spence and Errol Spence is Not Impressed
If you're a boxing fan then you're probably eagerly awaiting March 16th. Errol Spence Jr. versus Mikey Garcia. The Boogeyman of the welterweight division against an incredibly skilled four division champ vying for a Money May matching fifth. And because Garcia is moving up to welterweight (two weight classes above his preferred weight) he needs to pack on some extra muscle. Moving up to challenge for a belt at welterweight is risky, choosing to do it against Errol Spence may prove to be downright insane. Even welterweights don't want to fight him, and once he cleans out the division and moves up to light middleweight they won't want to fight him either/
For one thing, Spence is a giant welterweight. Walking around, he's probably like 5'10 185ish. He's got a long reach and according to those unfortunate to spar him he hits like a light heavyweight. Spence is taking this fight because every time he calls Keith Thurman out, Thurman gets another injury, and because Bob Arum will never let him fight Terence Crawford. Shawn Porter got tied up in a mandatory defense, so Mikey was by far the best money fight and from a skill standpoint Garcia is in an entirely different category than all of Spence's previous opponents. The only problem is they were actually welterweights.
Don't get me wrong, I do think Mikey has a chance and he certainly does too as he's been claiming he "sees something" he can exploit in Spence's game. He's way too good to be completely disregarded and Spence knows that too, which is exactly why I think he's in trouble. I think he's expecting the bigger fighter to lean on his power against the smaller fighter and thinks Spence won't be able to make adjustments if he isn't landing the heavy shots he wants to. The problem is Spence is extremely good at mixing up his combos and changing levels to punish the body. He doesn't rely on any one punch too often in much the same way Mikey doesn't. In my eyes, the two actually bear a great deal of similarity in their approaches. Very fundamental, very versatile, not flashy, incredibly effective. Both have power, both have excellent technique and defense, and both have extremely well respected teams in their corners. I want Mikey to win because I love the fact that he's willing to move up and taking on a real challenge against arguably the best welterweight in the world. With that said, I'm leaning towards Spence. He's finished every fight early going back to the end of 2013, I see this one ending the same way.
And while some people might be impressed by the added bulk, Errol is not.
Super fucking mean to call someone fat and sloppy for no reason. Guy's just trying to cultivate a little mass.
Dear John
Dear John,
As I sit here writing this letter, I still find myself having trouble coming to terms with how we found ourselves at this point. Looking back on our time together, I remember fondly the good times we had. That sweet summer night back in Phoenix in '93. The desert was hot that night my friend, but you were a different degree altogether. You gave me everything I had ever dreamed of and more...and now, twenty-five and a half years later, I am left with no choice but to beg for my release from your influence. We were on top of the world that night in the desert, and I fear you used that one, fleeting, incredible moment to secure a lifetime of forgiveness and second chances.
I don't mean for this to blindside you, and in all honesty I don't understand how it could. We've been together in our current capacity for fifteen years now, and while it felt comfortable at the time, I can only recall two or three truly great years together. Years where I can look back and say with full confidence and a smile on face that you made me happy. Really, genuinely happy. Again, I don't mean to hurt you, it is not my intent, but we have reached a crossroads. You and I have become two very different people going in two very different directions, and the time has come to part ways.
You probably have a million questions running through your mind right now, and I understand, but please I need you to let me finish...
So, how did we get here? Well, it was rocky from the jump. The very first thing you did was promise on something you couldn't deliver, but we were young and you had panache so I bought in. Then over the course of that first year together, it felt like we couldn't buy a win. If I had to put a percentage on it I would say I was happy about 28% of the time but I felt I owed you more of a chance. After all, it's tough to build a culture in one year and shortly after showing my faith, you delivered. Our next year together was a revelation, the situation showed amazing improvement, and I once again fell back into your ever confident arms only to be let down by another sub-par to average year following that one. That was then followed by fleeting glimpses of hope, which beget yet further disappointment, and then more hope, and more disappointment and so on and so forth in a never ending pattern of complacency and dysfunction until today: January 22nd, 2018. Today is the day I beg you once and for all to let me go. I need to start a new chapter in my life, a chapter post-you.
Again, as I write this I need you to know that I do appreciate the years and efforts you have given us. You played for us, you coached for us, you traded LaMarcus Alridge away for Tyrus Thomas, you have done a lot for us over the years; plenty in fact. Way more than enough. You gave fifteen goodish years for us and your contributions to this team will not soon be forgotten.
I will never forget that shot in Phoenix in June of '93 to send Barkley and the Suns back to the locker room left wanting what was rightfully ours. I also won't forget that Michael Jordan scored every single other point in that 4th quarter before you finally found yourself wide open on the perimeter for the game winner.
I will never forget when you lucked into the first overall pick and got to select the hometown kid D-Rose over Michael Beasley, a player Gar no doubt fawned over and probably wanted to draft instead*.
I will never forget when you choked Vinny Del Negro and then apologized for choking Vinny Del Negro, right before you and Gar fired Vinny Del Negro, calling it a necessary change in order to bring the team to the next level, an identical answer to the one given after the firing of Tom Thibodeau, and then shortly after that with Fred Hoiberg. I remember the dismissal of Ron Adams in 2013 - the guy who has been voted best assistant by NBA GMs the last 4 years in a row - because again, it was in the best interest of the team.** I remember hearing that he was upset at the drafting of Marquis Teague over Draymond Green...something I forgot about until I watched Green take a massive leap developmentally and help lead the Warriors to the championship in 2015. I remember because that was Ron Adams first year with the Warriors.
I'll never forget when you traded two picks for Doug McDermott or that those picks ended up being Jusuf Nurkic and Gary Harris, two players who happen to be better than Doug McDermott. And then I remember you trading Dougie, along with Taj and a 2nd round pick in an effort to avoid criticism for failing to make moves at the deadline. Luckily we got "high potential" Cam Payne back to go with the 3 months of Joffrey Lauvergne and Anthony Morrow. Then, after that trade I remember you said the coaching staff wanted McDermott, a fact that is not at all surprising when you consider that you and Gar are in charge of picking the coaching staffs.
I remember when you and Gar low balled up and coming star Jimmy Butler and allegedly threatened to sit him to hurt his value if he didn't agree to the deal. I remember you completing the Three Alphas with two players who couldn't shoot a lick, brought in to help your hand selected coach with an offense designed to be fast paced with significant spacing (i.e. shooting). I remember bringing in Michael Carter Williams to help with that same offense. I remember that we did all of this in an effort to "retool" because we didn't want to rebuild, because rebuilding takes too much time and effort and intelligence.
I remember your Christmas morning interview when you stated that it's difficult to draft outside of the top 10. Sure, guys like Kawhi and Giannis are 15th overall picks, but I get what you mean when you say the value just isn't there "unless you're lucky like we were with Jimmy Butler years ago." I remember reading that and thinking that you literally just admitted you don't know what you are doing, that surely you would be fired by the end of the season.
That was over two years ago.
That was over two years ago.
We're still the most dysfunctional team in the league. We still haven't found our coach. The best free agent signings you've made in FIFTEEN YEARS are Kyle Korver, Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy, and a 35 year old Pau Gasol so there isn't any real hope in that department. Sure, you brought in a big name in Dwyane Wade. All it took was $40 million for a year and change, what a bargain!
I need to wrap this up soon because reliving all of these moments is going to bring me to a very dark place, but I cannot do so until I say my final piece and ask you for the only favor I have ever asked you for.
John, I need you to just go way and get out of my life. Quit, pack up you bags, buy a house on the beach somewhere and enjoy the rest of your days. Your job is stressful and pressure filled and it's just not for everyone. There will always be major expectations with this organization and, quite frankly, Chicago is always going to be upset with you because you're always going to suck at your job. You've been at it for a decade and a half and still haven't the slightest clue how to run a functional organization. People learn how to perform brain surgery in less time than it's taken you to figure out how to adequately run a basketball team.
You know the Reinsdorfs will never fire you or Gar and I know that too. That is why I am asking from the bottom of my heart for you to let go. You need to avoid thinking of this as criticism and see it for what it is: a plain stating of the facts. You did do all of those things I just mentioned and that is why I am asking you to step away. Because at this point it's fair to say that I think you have done enough.
Sincerely.
PS - Take your idiot brother with you
*Speculation, but probably true.
**Best decision for Gar. Easier to suck at your job when one of your employees isn't constantly pointing out that you suck at your job.

Terence Crawford To Face Amir Khan on April 20th
Source - Terence Crawford's WBO welterweight title defense against Amir Khan has been confirmed, with the duo set to face off April 20 in the United States.
The date for the contest officially was announced Tuesday with the two boxers at a news conference in London. The fight is expected to be in New York or Las Vegas, but that detail has yet to be firmed up.
Wherever it is, it promises to be "one hell of a fight," Khan said Tuesday.
A three-division world champion unbeaten in 34 bouts, Crawford is rated among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Yet Khan (33-4), who recorded wins over Phil Lo Greco and Samuel Vargas in 2018 after a near two-year hiatus, insists he can spring an upset against the American.
"Crawford is beatable. I want that WBO world title. It's going to be one hell of a fight," said Khan, who went on to explain why he will not yet face fellow Briton Kell Brook — a man he has called out on numerous occasions.
After knocking out Jeff Horn to claim the WBO strap last June, Crawford dominated Jose Benavidez in a successful first defense in October and will undoubtedly start as a heavy favorite against Khan.
"I'll be looking to go out there to seek and destroy," Crawford said. "I'm excited about this fight because I believe it can push my career to another level."
It's official. After the backlash surrounding the rumors that Crawford was going to fight Luis Collazo - a past his prime 37 year old former contender - he made the switch official and booked a fight with Amir Khan - a past his prime British former contender. Can't really knock either fighter here.
Would it be nice to see one of the best pound for pound boxers in the entire world prove it against the fiercest competition welterweight has to offer? Yes, yes it would. But Terence Crawford fights for Top Rank and fights on ESPN, which means the Showtime and Fox guys are out of the question for him. That's right...No Errol Spence. No Keith Thurman. No Danny Garcia. No Shawn Porter. No Charlo brothers, nothing. None of those dudes are coming over to fight Crawford on ESPN which means those fights straight up ain't happening and there really isn't anything he can do about it. He found a guy who is a step up in competition, albeit a small one, and a guy who provides a much bigger name to use to build the fight. It makes sense.
As for Khan, I really wanted to see the Kell Brook fight happen. People thought the buildup for Mayweather-Pacquiao was bad? Kell Brook and Amir Khan have been claiming they will fight each other "next year" since fucking 2011. At this point both have seen better days and aren't anywhere close to the fighters they once were. Brook just offered up a very underwhelming performance against Michael Zerafa where he looked slow and his timing was off all night. Khan much the same against Samuel Vargas, a match in which he was knocked down which at this point is pretty much a guarantee in an Amir Khan fight.
Brook had his eye socket shattered by GGG, only to get it fixed then come back and have it shattered again by Errol Spence. Khan got knocked to within a couple inches of death itself versus Canelo. The two are eerily similar in a lot of regards, and the bad blood has existed and persisted for a decade. But Khan wanted the title shot and a chance at one of the pound for pound best. Can't really knock a guy for daring to be great. Plus at the end of the day speed kills and Khan has that in spades. The big issue isn't his skill or his speed, it's that Khan has a massive tendency to expose himself to big shots and he gets smokes at least a couple of times a fight, which is going to be a huge problem against an animal like Bud Crawford.
The funny thing is Khan keeps saying, "The Brook fight will always be there," and at this point I can't even argue with him. He's been doing this runaround for years and here I am, still wondering and waiting to see if maybe once Khan fights Crawford then maybe, just maybe he will finally get around to fighting Kell Brook.
**Fast Forward to December 2019**
"Listen, I want the Kell Brook fight. Of course I want the Kell Brook fight, but there's bigger fights. And the Brook fight will still be there in 2020. Definitely, we'll do the Brook fight in 2020."
-Amir Khan
Khan-Crawford 4/20. Should be average.

Bonus Canelo KO on Khan. So brutal.

Bantamweight | Thomas Almeida | vs. | Marlon Vera |
If you're a fight fan just take a moment and read through that list of names...
...Wow. Let's break this down a little bit so it's easier to digest.
- Two different major championship fights with two of the most dominant champions of their respective generation.
- The UFC debut of the current top ranked pound for pound shit talker in Ben Askren versus a living legend in Ruthless Robbie Lawler.
- Holly Holm back in action against Aspen Ladd who to be perfectly honest I don't really know of at all. She's likely in a great deal of trouble.
- Jeremy Stephens - an absolute brawler - against the one guy who, in my stupid brain, can give Max Holloway a run for his money at 145: Zabit.
- Cody Garbrandt in a bounce back fight against a very capable Pedro Munhoz.
Again - wow. This is hands down the single best card I've ever seen and close to the most excited I've ever been for a fight night in my entire life. I need the UFC to keep this fucking card together, which is going to make it all the more devastating when a couple of the fights inevitably break down. The worst part is that in my mind the two most likely candidates are the Jon Jones and Ben Askren fights.
Jon Jones still hasn't been cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and granted a license even though his system is miraculously cleared of steroids again even though it might still pop up. So what happens if Jones tests positive all leading up to the fight and then "pops up" again a few days before? According to Dana and Jeff Novitzky (accounting major) who were told by The Experts, the trace amounts of turinabol metabolite in Jon Jones system might randomly appear from time to time for up to 7 years...is Nevada just cool with that now even though they totally were not cool with it three weeks ago? Only time will tell.
The Ben Askren fight is a different story. Ben Askren will be there and he will face someone across the octagon at UFC 235, that much I can guarantee. As for Robbie Lawler, that is a completely different story. From what I've read, he might not even be cleared to fight yet. I'm sure he's working out and training but for someone who has been out as long as he has (13 months), going into a fight with a specialist like Askren those sparring sessions are crucial for getting your feel back.
I'll be excited for the fight regardless, if only for the simple fact that it's Askren's debut and I am absolutely dying to see him against UFC competition, but the matchup is something I was genuinely looking forward too. Such a huge contrast of styles. Robbie likes stand up and bang it out while Askren just wants to pin you down and physically dominate you in a death by a thousand cuts while also holding a plastic bag over your head type of approach. Think of him as an ultra American version of Khabib. He's not the most entertaining, sure, but he also NEVER loses.
If I had one critique, one small little ask, it would be that Colby Covington get to fight Woodley instead of Usman.
Usman and Woodley is a better fight in my mind, but the fact of the matter is that Colby had the interim belt and he and Tyron fucking hate each other. True, unadulterated disgust for one another. It would be an absolute beatdown, an ass whooping of damn near unbelievable proportions. Colby legitimately may have left T-Mobile Arena in a body bag should that fight have happened. Now that I'm thinking about it, that fight needs to headline it's own show. The entire lead-up would be a goddamn circus stealing away everyone else's shine.
I'm All in on Balkan-born Basketball Players. Please Join Me in the Celebration
I'll be the first person to say that I typically don't care for foreign born players with rare exceptions, very few of which I actually like before they enter the league. The only of which that I can think of is Luka Doncic himself, and that took 3 years of absolutely dominating grown men before I was really confident in his ability. And only after making easy work of pretty much every defense he's come up against am I now 100% sold. Luka is the absolute truth and there is no denying it, which is why exactly zero people are trying to deny it. In fact everyone is completely fawning over the kid, and rightfully so. But in all that hoopla, people are forgetting to heap praise on a few of his Balkan-born brothers in arms: Nikola Jokic, Nikola Vucevic, and Jusuf Nurkic. I am honored to be able to do so now.
Let's start with Jokic in Denver. Where to even begin? He's one of the most absurdly skilled 7 footers I've ever seen, let's start there. Strong enough to back defenders down from the free throw line with a soft enough tough to drain 3s. Even more impressive is his passing ability. In true euroball fashion, Jokic has an extremely well rounded offensive game but even for a European, he has an amazing ability to create for other players and he does it with crafty little array of ball fakes which help him to shift an manipulate the defense without actually moving. Skill wise, he's got it all and he stuffs a stat sheet like nobody's business.
Add into that the fact that he got fined $25,000 for innocently saying "no homo" about Wendell Carter being longer than him, and his ability to make unarguably the funniest dumb faces in the league. Plus he's an effort guy. You need that guy.
Next up is Nikola Vucevic in Orlando. No offense to Vucevic, but we're going to keep this short and sweet because any time I spend more than a couple minutes talking/thinking about inland Florida I start to sink into a real deep, dark depression. It goes without saying but that state really is trash. I don't want to go into it too much, but interior Florida is basically a giant landfill that was filled up with horrible people, reptiles, and insects instead of garbage. Garbage would have been better. With that being said Vucevic is having one helluva year for the Magic. Much like Jokic, he features a extremely versatile skill set and although he doesn't quite facilitate on the same level, he's still got some nifty passes in the tool bag, not to mention his ability to knock down 38% of his shots from deep - invaluable in today's game. Bangs in the post and can stretch it out and drawn a defender to either hit the jumper or open up lanes. Hopefully he gets traded to literally anywhere else on earth.
And finally we have the very man who inspired this blog: Jusuf Nurkic. I know what you're going to say: "Nurkic isn't nearly as good as those other three." You're absolutely right. Sure, he's probably the second best defender of the bunch, but offensively those other three players are just on a different level and have a lot more weapons in their arsenal. That's not to say Nurkic isn't good, he's definitely a quality little player and at 24, he still has a few solid years of improvement ahead of him. But he's not making this list because of his abilities on the court, he's making it because he absolutely ethered Iman Shumpert in his postgame interview last night after the two got into a little scuffle following a hard screen by Nurkic. When told that Shump waited outside the Blazers locker room to have a word, young Jusuf had this to say:
“I’m not worried about it. He’s going into retirement soon. I just said what I said. I‘m not worried about a guy who’s going into retirement soon.”
Iman Shumpert is 28 years old and has only been in the league 3 years longer than Nurkic.
Game: Jusuf
Tate Martell: The Backtrack King
Source - 247Sports has learned that Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell is looking at Louisville, Miami and West Virginia as potential transfer destinations.
Martell is expected to visit all three this week beginning with West Virginia on Sunday. Per Eersports insider Chris Anderson, Martell will head to Miami on Monday. 247Sports has been told the Louisville visit will be Wednesday and Thursday.
Martell is expected to make a final decision the following week.
Martell's name was entered in the transfer portal last Thursday shortly after former five-star quarterback Justin Fields announced he'd be transferring to Ohio State. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite billed Martell as the nation's No. 2 dual-threat passer in the 2017 recruiting class.
A couple of days ago, news broke that Tate Martell is transferring from Ohio State with the likely destination being Louisville, Miami, or West Virginia. I for one was utterly shocked by this little development because last time I checked, Tate Martell was saying he definitely wasn't going to transfer while simultaneously warning 5-star phenom transfer Justin Fields that the offense was too difficult to pick up in year one. When was that again? Oh that's right, it was like two weeks ago.
If you don't feel like watching the video, I got you covered. The entire video can be summed up with one quote:
But, to put it simply, Martell is not scared of losing the starting job to Fields.
“Why would I leave for someone who hasn’t put in a single second into this program?” Martell said. “I put two years of literally working my ass off into something that I have been waiting for and dreaming of having my whole life. To just run away from somebody who hasn’t put a single second into workouts anything like that and doesn’t know what the program is all about, there’s not a chance.”
Turns out there was a small chance. Trust me I know, I too was shocked. Columbus may never recover from the loss. As an Iowa fan, I genuinely hope they never do. On the plus side if you are an OSU fan, you get a 6'3 230 lb. beast who many considered to be the consensus #1 player in the country in a recruiting class that included Trevor Lawrence - yes, that Trevor Lawrence. The one who everyone is saying would be the consensus first overall pick in the draft as a 19 YEAR OLD if he were allowed to declare tomorrow.
Fields has been described as a better passing version of Cam Newton. He might not be quite on Dwayne Haskins level as a passer, but don't let his freshman season at Georgia fool you. This kid is a big time threat with his arm as well as his legs. If you thought Haskins made Ryan Day's system look good, wait until this kid steps into the horseshoe. All that's left is getting a waiver to be eligible to play in 2019-20 and OSU will be back to being the gold standard in the Big Ten after a grueling 3-4 week period of uncertainty for their fans.
Fuck my life.
